Why study Science at De La Salle?
Science can be fun — and entertaining! But the true value of a Science course lies in learning something about the world around you. You may not remember what transpiration means, the exact distance from the Earth to the Sun, or what makes a chemical bond the covalent kind, but you'll have spent some time thinking about the world around you and how it works. And some day, when someone asks why the sky is blue or what makes a rainbow, your son will know the reason for it.
Furthermore, the skills that pupils develop as they study Science will be some of the most valuable and transferable that they will gain during school. Problem solving
& planning, managing information, working with others, communication & presentation skills, maths and ICT help students prepare for any career they may choose.

Science is a strength in De La Salle. Our students enjoy a wide variety of activities both in and out of school, for example: · Interactive lessons - e.g. controlling the Faulkes International Telescope · Exciting experiments · Science Club · Field Trips (e.g. to the Belfast Zoo, W5, Quoile Countryside Centre, Armagh planetarium, Killowen Activity Centre) · Video conferencing |

Development
The Science Department will continue to raise levels of achievement. With regular department meetings and through action plans we're always trying to improve how we do things, how we teach and how we can make sure that all our pupils recieve and enjoy the best possible education. We're also not afraid to ask our kids what THEY think - be it through getting their opinions on after school clubs, trips, or by listening to the student council voice.
Parent / Teacher Meetings
We will formally invite parents (and pupils) to meet with their Science teacher at least once a year (twice a year for Year 12 pupils). It is a chance to see how your son is getting on in school, where his strengths and weaknesses lie, how they socialise with other children in the classroom, extra curricular activities etc. It is also a chance for us to learn more about your child in order that we can work together for your child’s success. We'll tell you when your son is doing well in school, but we'll also ensure we'll inform you when we need to work together if he's not reaching his full potential. Leaving this to the end of the year is too late, so we make a committment to you and your son to make sure we keep you up to date through the year as needed.
The Science Department is committed to working with you to make sure your son achieves their full potential. If you have questions or concerns throughout the year you can also arrange a meeting to speak with their teacher (either on the phone or in person). Please contact the school office on 02844 612520 or send a note into school if you would like to arrange an appointment with a class teacher, stating the reason, your availability and wether you would like to meet in person or would prefer a telephone meeting. We'll get back to you with a mutually convenient date and time.
